Difficult Journeys:
Education in the Aleutian Islands

A Collaborative Exhibition
The Museum of the Aleutians

The Citizens of Unalaska

The course of the last 250 years of Aleutian history, when the Native ways of knowing first encountered Western education was a circuitous and bumpy road. This is a story of cultural changes brought to the Chain over two centuries.

June 3, 2011 until November 5, 2011

During this time educational experiences took many of the native children away from the lives they had previously known, from the lives of their ancestors, and into new areas where they hoped to
find prosperity and contentment.
