The First in Alaska

The Underwater Archaeological Investigation of the Russian-American Company sailing bark Kad'yak

A report on the recent investigation of sunken Russian-America ship lost in the Kodiak Island area. The Kad'yak, a 132-foot, three-masted brig belonged to the Russian-American Company. In the winter of 1860 the Kad'yak was departing Alaska with 356 tons of ice on board, bound for San Francisco, when it struck a rock and slowly filled with water. The ship itself, buoyed by ice within, floated for three days before finally sinking to the bottom of Icon Bay, on Spruce Island near Kodiak, Alaska.

The newly arrived Collections Manager Evguenia Anichtchenko was a participant on this project.
